Letter to Governor Hochul -
NY S09018
The bill, now signed, ensures that each local school district holds a minimum of one ex-officio (non-voting) student member on the school board. This was an important step towards increasing student civic involvement within their own school districts, and their civic lives as a whole. NYSEC's letter to Hochul on the bill, signed into law just a week after, outlines the cruciality of laws as such.
Governor Hochul,
We are writing to you on behalf of New York Student Engaged Citizenship (NYSEC - ny-sec.org), an organization bringing media literacy, civic responsibility, and informed citizenship into the lives of students across New York. Our efforts are focused at both the local and state level, working with leaders to propel youth civic participation to the forefront of student’s lives.
Recently, the NY S09018 Bill has been approved by the NYS Senate and the NYS Assembly, requiring each school district to have an Ex-Officio student member on the school board. This vital bill now awaits your signature. By giving students across the state a say in their education as well as their representation, we are setting up a generation that grows up on the foundational principles of democracy and civic participation from a young age. This law is paramount. With ever increasing polarization, with lack of civic understanding playing a significant role, it is time to act. The people of New York, your Constituents, call upon you to act.
Best Regards,
New York Student Engaged Citizenship
